Abby Johnston

I grew up in New England hoping to become an artist. And, in many ways, my hope has been realized. I graduated from the Maine College of Art in 2000 with a BFA in Metalsmithing and Jewelry. For several years I have been working with a niche publisher in Portland, Maine, helping to develop technical books on craft, as well as consulting on numerous creative and challenging design projects.

With a passion for the arts and a unique understanding of the publishing industry, I started upalaPress in 2004. As my circle of friends and professional colleagues has grown in depth and width, still, my job is to provide you with unusual art and well-informed, carefully designed books about the arts and crafts. I hope I have done my job well.

Design Philosophy:
We believe that great design is great for everyone. Design is not simply about aesthetics-it is also about integrity, structure, function, education, and accountability.

We believe that listening and observing are paramount to understanding our clients' needs, and that the design process is an exchange of ideas and information. When you choose to work with upalaPress, you are joining our commitment to share common strengths and expand each other's worlds.

upalaPress in Practice:
We actively seek information about developments in renewable resources and sustainable building/manufacturing practices. As a major consumer of energy and paper products, the publishing industry has a responsibility to support these efforts. To contribute to a healthy future, upalaPress works with local and domestic printers as often as possible.
